What is the Class Act?

The Class Act is a new federal program that is specifically designed to offer Long Term Care insurance to people who need assistance with activities of daily living.  The New York Times did a nice question and answer article called "Details on the Class Act".

The post it note version of this plan is that after five years of premiums (about $123 a month) you would be eligible to receive a benefit if you developed functional disabilities that hindered activities of daily living. The benefit would be around $75 a day which doesn't sound like much.  However, the program is only meant to delay the transition from complete independence to continuous care.  This amount would pay for four hours of home health aide service in Austin which can have a dramatically positive impact on someone's life.

In four hours, a personal caregiver can help with breakfast, start some laundry, change the bed sheets, help with a shower, take out the trash, get the mail, run to the grocery and play one game of cards (maybe best two out of three).
