The elderly deal with snow on Super Bowl Sunday
There are some pretty major events going on this week that can easily distract us from thinking about the needs of senior citizens in our lives. This week is Super Bowl Sunday right here in Texas. At the same time, there is a massive winter storm system blanketing much of our country. So right in the middle of this major snow storm we also need to plan for a big party.
Seniors have special concerns when it comes to cold weather. Hypothermia can set in more easily for older people who are weaker. To add an extra layer of concern, here in Austin we are beginning to experience rolling blackouts to try and keep up with the electrical demand of our southern heating systems.
These blackouts are usually short. However, it couldn’t hurt to check on your older neighbors and make sure they are stocked up with supplies, medicine and blankets in the event of a shut in.
Check the local weather in Austin or wherever your loved one lives and remind them to cover their exterior hydrants and bring in pets. And most of all bundle up and stay warm.
Finally, I hope you all enjoy the Super Bowl this weekend. Being from Texas, I don’t really have a dog in this race. However, as an ex-Oilers fan, all I can say is… Go Packers!
