D is for Deficient

Austin Texas is such a beautiful city.  We are blessed with long (although hot) summer days and vast clear blue skies.  As much fun as it is to be outside, it is also important to protect ourselves from over exposure to the sun.   My fear of melanoma has trained me to be more religious about my sun screen application and reminds me to wear a cap for protection when I go outside.

Then I see this article in The New York Times titled, “ What do you lack? Probably vitamin D “.  This made me think of how difficult it can be for many seniors to get outside and get enough sun to naturally produce enough vitamin D.    Interestingly, 5-10 minutes, two or three times a week is all it takes.  It is still recommended to protect your face and head but let your arms and legs soak up some rays.

For seniors who receive in-home care in Austin TX it can be as simple as going outside to get the mail with your caregiver or even going to the end of the block and back or just visiting in the yard with a neighbor.   Always be safe and respect your limits.
